Residencies

During a residency, Miles works directly in the classroom or rehearsal hall with students in preparation for a culminating event or completion of a project. Residencies are custom designed in cooperation with classroom and/or music teachers. The duration can be as brief as a single day, or as long as four months. Listed below are some examples of residencies:

Composition and Jazz Improvisation

(Grades 7-12)

Miles has worked with a small jazz ensemble to create a new piece of music with a new melody and an improvisation section as well.  After 3-4 hours of instructional time, the students were ready to perform their composition for the school and their parents.

Songwriting

(Grades K-12)

Anyone can write a song.  Younger students have written songs about fairy tales, older students have written songs about war or friendship.   Topics can be tied to current events, to literature,  to silly things, or serious matters.

Send a Song to the President

(Grades K-12)

Everyone has a political voice.  Miles has written a song entitled, “If I Were The President” that needs student input to be completed.   Once completed, it can be recorded and sent directly to Washington DC.  It raises awareness in young students that they have a political voice.  In 2005, the ideas of 1500 3rd grade students were sent to President Bush.

Readers Theatre

Miles has a BA in Oral Interpretation and an MA in Music performance.  His professional life is filled with numerous examples of mixing literature and music on stage.  He has brought this to classroom settings where students have staged stories, and written accompanying music.

Examples include:  The Tiny Seed, Holes. Why Do Mosquitoes Buzz in Peoples Ears, Mufarro’s Beautiful Daughter, and Where The Sidewalk Ends.

Orchestral Residencies

Miles has worked extensively with Junior High and High School Orchestras in concerts of pop music, folk music, rock and roll, Beatles, traditional fiddle tunes and original material.  In concert Miles plays with the orchestra on guitar, banjo and vocals.  He provides the scores for these residencies.
