School Orchestras

Miles has performed with both professional and school orchestras.  He brings a wide range of music and envigorates the orchestral setting with his passion and musicianship. Students are delighted to participate in concerts with Miles and his exciting repertoire of music. The materials fall into three general categories.

“The Renassance Banjo”

This collection highlights Miles’ catalog of original compositions for banjo with orchestra, chamber orchestra or string quartet. These are most appropriate for high school orchestras.

Beatles and Popular Music

In addition to playing the banjo, Miles is a fine singer and guitarist with a catalog of popular songs where he plays the guitar and sings with orchestral accompaniment. This is particularly recommended for Junior High School Orchestra.

Traditional Music

Miles has spent a lifetime exploring different American, Irish, and French musical traditions and has a selection of traditional fiddle tunes arranged for banjo and strings. This material is an excellent supplement to either of the other orchestral programs.

School Orchestras FAQs

Can orchestra directors review the scores in advance?

Absolutely. Miles can send the scores along or arrange an in person consultation if possible.

What is the planning process?

After reviewing the scores, Miles would work with the orchestra director to create a program most appropriate to the schools schedule and the orchestra’s interests.

How much rehearsal is necessary?

That will always vary, but Miles’ preference is always on the side of more rehearsals than less, as the process of rehearsal is so important.

May we speak with other schools about your residencies with them?

Yes, absolutely. There are schools in the Chicago area, as well as in Easton, Pennsylvania who would be happy to share their points of view.

Do the final programs require a full concert or can they be incorporated into an existing concert schedule?

Either is possible and both have been done. When it’s a stand-alone concert, Miles often performs a few selections by himself as well.
